The Legacy of
Sister Dolores Schuh, CHM

dolores-schuh.JPG

Sister Dolores Schuh is a Catholic nun who professed under the Order of the Church of the Humility of Mary. Sr. Dolores’ life’s work has been to follow the will of God in ways most of us will never know. Sr. Dolores has done this in serving the poor, visiting and writing those imprisoned and on death row, and continually in prayer for those less fortunate: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who morn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:3-5).

Sr. Dolores’ current work includes writing to the approximately 133 members on death row in Central Prison, Raleigh, North Carolina. Each person on death row receives a birthday card and a Christmas card from Sr. Dolores. One of Sr. Dolores’ pen pals, Danny, has been incarcerated for over 30 years, but calls Sr. Dolores every Monday. Danny and Sr. Dolores have developed a very special friendship that helps Danny in his walk with God. To this day, Sr. Dolores is a member of the National Coalition to abolish the death penalty. Her work has been recently featured on the front page of The Catholic Messenger, the Catholic Newspaper of the Diocese of Davenport.

Establishing a nonprofit organization to help single-parent families who are in a homeless situation is another way to honor the life of Sr. Dolores and give to those among us who are in need.
